MORNING THEFT headlines a kick ass night of women who rock at Spacebar
April, 14 2023 – Columbus, OH
It’s 2023 and if there is still anyone out there who believes that women can’t play rock ‘n’ roll, they’ve clearly never seen the line up that hit the stage on April 14th at local Columbus venue Spacebar. All three bands on the bill are fronted by women and none of them left the crowd disappointed that evening.
The Esteems
The night was kicked off by The Esteems who have an upbeat fresh alternative vibe that you can, at times, find yourself involuntary bopping around the venue to even if it’s your first show such like myself. After doing a little research I found it was their song “Palm Springs” that got me boogying in place. Lead singer Jessie’s delivery of the lyric “you can dance if you want to” just furthers your desire to well, dance if you want to. (It’s been added to my Spotify playlist too)
The band released a new single entitled “Find Me” in March and have an album due out this year.

Betty Machete and the Angry Cougars
Betty Machete and the Angry Cougars took the stage next and let me tell you, as someone who hadn’t seen them before either, I was not prepared. I have friends who absolutely love The Angry Cougars and have told me glorious things but it’s one of those until you go see them for yourself, you don’t know, kind of things. Betty Machete comes at you full force with her punk rock voice from the get go. Then you add in H-bomb hitting the kit like a woman possessed, Two Cans and Thunderhead shredding it on guitar and Punky beating up on the bass and you have the classic makings of a good ol’ fashion punk band. Their loud, in your face sound will thrill the hearts of punk lovers alike. You will leave with a ringing in your ears, a cramp in your neck and a smile on your face from how hard you just got rocked. Absolutely recommend if you are looking for a damn good rock thrashing at show, you check them out.
Their album “Angry Cougars II” is available everywhere you stream/buy music.

Morning Theft
Morning Theft closed out the “whole night of debauchery” with the energy and hard core sound that Jenelle, Nick, J.D., and Cody are known for. They came out delighting the audience with tunes of old and new, including freshly released single “Lenny” that made it’s radio debut earlier in the week. The group also surprised everyone with two new songs that haven’t been recorded yet. The set was highlighted by the band’s cover of an AFI classic “Miss Murder” where front woman Jenelle gets to showcase her impressive ability to scream at the top of her lungs and still sound amazing while doing it. As a long time fan of Morning Theft, they even put a smile on this writers face when they broke out a song that according to the band is” a decade old”, and one of my all time favorites, “Skelton Twins”. They hadn’t played it in a while and it served as a great reminder of how far they have come with the evolution of their sound since I first starting seeing them in 2017. I always like to tell everyone that in my opinion Jenelle is one of the best female lead singers in Columbus that you probably haven’t seen and after the show, I received confirmation of that when two newbies approached her and said “this is our first time seeing you guys and we were absolutely blown away.”
If you, too, would like to be blown away and haven’t seen Morning Theft yet, make sure you rectify that by checking out their next show which takes place on June 2nd at Double Happiness in Columbus or they will be performing at the Columbus Arts Festival on June 10th.
